TIRINTO
Τίρυνς, antica città greca del Peloponneso, sita in Argolide. La leggenda narra che fu fondata da Proteo, fratello di Acrisio re di Argo. Tirinto fu spesso sottomessa ad Argo, fu definitivamente distrutta da Argo nella prima metà del V secolo a.C. e venne quindi abbandonata. Abitata già dal III millennio a.C.; Tirinto raggiunse il massimo splendore in epoca micenea (1400-1200 a.C.). Di Tirinto rimangono le mura, di circa 7,5 m di spessore, costruite con massi giganteschi, e le rovine del palazzo, situato nella parte sud dell'acropoli, costruito nel XIV-XIII secolo a.C. Il palazzo di Tirinto, simile a quello di Cnosso, fu ritrovato da dal grande genio archeologico di Heinrich Schliemann negli scavi del 1884-85. Nella Teogonia di Esiodo è descritta come santa. Nell'Iliade è così cantata:
Seguìa l'eletta de' guerrier, cui d'Argo
mandava la pianura e la superba
d'ardue mura Tirinto e le di cupo
golfo custodi Ermïone ed Asìne.

TIRYNS
Tiryns, an ancient Greek city in the Peloponnese, located in Argolis. Legend has it that it was founded by Proteus, brother of Acrisius, king of Argos. Tiryns was often subjugated by Argos, was finally destroyed by Argos in the first half of the 5th century BC, and was then abandoned. Inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC, Tiryns reached its peak splendor in the Mycenaean era (1400-1200 BC). All that remains of Tiryns are its walls, about 7.5 meters thick, built with gigantic rocks, and the ruins of the palace, located on the southern side of the acropolis, built in the 14th-13th century BC. The palace of Tiryns, similar to that of Knossos, was discovered by the great archaeological genius Heinrich Schliemann during excavations in 1884-85. In Hesiod's Theogony she is described as holy. In the Iliad it is sung thus:
The chosen of the warriors followed, to whom the plain of Argos sent
and the proud
with its arduous walls Tiryns and the guardians of the dark
gulf, Hermione and Asine.
